August 2026 — Seen Digitally

What a crazy month!

August has been one of those months where you look back and wonder how everything actually fitted into four weeks.

We had our moving date set for the 18th August, which was also the day we were due to head off to Germany. Not exactly ideal timing, but after everything we'd been through getting the house move sorted, we were determined to make it work.

Then, in the run-up to moving day, I came down really ill.

Completely wiped out.

Thankfully, I managed to bounce back enough to get through the move, although I didn't exactly have much time to recover. We got the keys, moved what we could, and somehow found ourselves preparing to leave for Germany that same evening.

I think I managed about 1 hour of sleep before setting off on an overnight drive towards the Black Forest.

Probably not the recommended way to start a holiday!

Some more on that in a previous post  - https://www.willgudgeon.com/2026/08/crazy-week-done.html

Germany & The Black Forest

I took the Fuji X-T1 with me, expecting to get plenty of photographs along the way.

In reality?

I barely used it.

Instead, the GoPro 12 came out for pretty much everything.

And you know what? It was perfect.

For a family trip where we're walking, exploring, getting wet and generally moving around constantly, having a tiny camera that can go almost anywhere is incredibly useful.

There was no worrying about changing lenses, carrying a camera bag or protecting expensive equipment. It just came along for the ride.

And it captured the memories.

We spent a couple of days at Europa-Park, followed by plenty of exploring around the Black Forest and beyond.

There were alpine coasters, beautiful towns, old castles, mountain roads and some incredible scenery.

We even managed to see the world's largest cuckoo clock.

There was something new around almost every corner, and although this wasn't a photography trip, I found myself constantly looking around and noticing things.

Sometimes the best camera is simply the one you actually have with you.

And for this trip, that was definitely the GoPro.

Home Again

Eventually, it was time to head home.

Back to our new house.

And almost immediately, the holiday feeling disappeared beneath a mountain of jobs.

Boxes to unpack.

Things to repair.

Things to decorate.

Things to buy.

And probably a very long list of things that I haven't even discovered yet!

After such a hectic few months, I'm not sure September is going to bring a sudden return to serious photography. At the moment, most of the photographs on my phone seem to be pictures of jobs that need doing or things I need to buy.

But perhaps that's okay.

Photography has never been something I want to force.

There will be photographs when there are photographs.

There will be seasons when the camera gets used every day, and seasons when it sits quietly waiting.

August was certainly the former in terms of life, even if it wasn't particularly photographic in the traditional sense.

A house move.

A road trip.

The Black Forest.

Europa-Park.

Thousands of miles of driving.

A GoPro full of memories.

And a new home waiting for us when we returned.

Not a bad month at all.

This was August, seen digitally.

Also, while I was in Germany I was sent this by Ralph Man, the Mania MFZ 6x17, more on this soon.
