A New Home, Familiar Views
September has been a full-on, DIY-intensive month.
Since moving into our new home, there's been no shortage of things to do. Jobs to finish, ideas for future projects, and plenty of plans for what we'd like to change and improve over time.
Photography has taken a bit of a back seat, to say the least.
Most of the pictures I've taken this month have been far from the landscapes and creative experiments I'd usually share. Instead, my camera roll is full of photos from DIY shops, prices for things I'm thinking about buying, ideas for future projects, and pictures of wires so I can remember what needs rewiring!
Not exactly the most exciting photographic collection, but all part of this new chapter.
A Familiar Stop on a New Commute
One thing I've been getting used to is my new, slightly longer cycle to work.
It's been nice, actually. A little more time on the bike, and a different route that takes me through a park I've photographed many times over the years.
A couple particularly nice mornings, I decided to stop and grab a quick photograph on my phone.
Nothing planned, nothing complicated. Just a moment when the light caught my attention and I had a few minutes to spare.
It reminded me how easily photography can slip into everyday life. You don't always need to head out with a bag full of cameras or set aside an entire day to make photographs. Sometimes it's simply about noticing what's in front of you.
And perhaps that's something I've needed reminding of lately.
The View From Home
Although I've barely been out with a camera this month, there's something tempting me every time I look outside.
From our new home, I have a clear view across to the South Downs, including a particular stretch of landscape and a tree I've photographed many times over the years.
It's a familiar view, but seeing it from here feels different.
After years of visiting places to photograph them, I now have a landscape sitting right in front of me. I can watch the weather change, see the light move across the hills, and wait for those mornings or evenings when everything comes together.
It's got me thinking about future photographs already.
Perhaps I'll revisit some old ideas with the Fuji X-T1. Perhaps I'll try something completely different with one of my pinhole cameras. I've got some new cameras waiting to be explored, along with plenty of digital ideas that have been quietly building up.
For now, though, they're mostly ideas.
The house still needs plenty of attention, and there are more DIY projects waiting to be tackled. But it's reassuring to know that when I do find some time, I won't have to travel far to find something worth photographing.
Sometimes the next project is already waiting outside your window.
Until Next Time
September hasn't been a particularly productive month photographically, but life has been moving forward in other ways.
We're slowly making the house our own, settling into new routines, and beginning to imagine what we can do with the space around us.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, I'm finding myself thinking more and more about getting back out with my cameras.
Perhaps October will bring a little more time. Perhaps I'll finally get around to trying those new pinhole cameras, or spend a morning photographing that familiar tree across the Downs.
There's no shortage of ideas. I just need to find the time to follow them.
Until then, I'll keep noticing the little things, even if most of my photographs are currently of DIY projects and shopping lists.
This was September, seen digitally.
