I’ve been pretty much bedridden for most of the week. I started feeling run down at work on Monday, spent all day in bed on Tuesday, and in the early hours of Wednesday morning I genuinely felt like I was dying. Thankfully, things slowly started to improve throughout Wednesday.
By late afternoon, the kids wanted to go and watch the eclipse. I could certainly have done with getting myself out of the house for some fresh air and a bit of vitamin D, so we took a short walk down to the local park.
Some very kind people lent the kids some eclipse glasses, while we also got creative with a few bits of cardboard to make a pinhole projector and a colander. Naturally, I couldn’t resist pulling out my 16-stop ND filter and having a look through that too.
I hadn’t even bothered bringing a camera.
To be honest, it wasn’t exactly the most exciting photographic outing of my life. I spent a fair amount of the time lying on the grass, half passed out and recovering, while everyone else watched the eclipse. But the little pinhole projector worked surprisingly well, and the colander was actually pretty cool — turning the eclipse into a whole collection of tiny crescents.
My illness is almost over now, which is a relief. Hopefully it stays that way, because next week involves moving house and then driving to Germany. I definitely couldn’t have managed either of those things in the state I was in earlier this week.
And while I’ve been largely horizontal, my wife has been doing an absolutely amazing job clearing out the house and getting everything ready for the move.
So, perhaps not my greatest photographic adventure, but it was good to get outside, spend some time with the family, and watch something a little bit unusual happening in the sky.
