The Shots That Didn’t Matter (And the Day That Did)

Saturday 18th April saw me heading up to Oxford to meet Andy (Irresponsible Pictures) and Andrea (Mia Pinhole) for a day that promised cycling, coffee, beer, a pub lunch—and, of course, a bit of photography.

This time, I made the decision to leave the film pinhole cameras at home...well I did have one packed just in case, but had planned not to use it. Instead, I packed my digital setup: a Fuji XT1, Samyang 12mm f/2, a TTArtisan 25mm f/2, and a Hoya Infrared R72 filter—something I always enjoy experimenting with on bright, sunny days.

That plan didn’t entirely last. On arrival, Andrea kindly handed me one of his Mia pinhole lens caps for my Fuji X, so naturally, that had to be put to use.

We made the most of the early quiet in the city, wandering through some of Oxford’s iconic spots—Radcliffe Camera and the Bridge of Sighs among them—capturing a few frames before the crowds began to build.

After meeting Andrea by the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, we stopped for coffee and cake before setting off on a relaxed cycle along the canals. It was one of those rides where the journey matters more than the destination—taking in the scenery, stopping here and there for photos, and giving the Mia pinhole lens cap a proper outing.

Eventually, the ride led us down to Abingdon-on-Thames, where we settled in for a well-earned beer and a great pub lunch, followed by a gentle wander around the town.

We may not have come away with a huge number of photos, but that wasn’t really the point. Sometimes it’s about stepping away from the noise of everyday life—sharing a few laughs, exploring a beautiful place, and simply enjoying time with good friends.
