Looking Back, Looking Forward: Between Film and Paper

It’s coming to the end of the year, and for some reason this time always feels a little strange. We start to reevaluate things, take stock of where we are, and make plans for the year ahead — sometimes with purpose, sometimes just out of habit.

With a bit of a clear-out recently, I’ve noticed how much my photography has slowed down towards the end of this year. Film photography especially has taken a bit of a knock. A lot of that comes down to practical reasons — a bathroom renovation has been taking up time, space, and mental energy — but it also made me stop and think about how I’ve been spending my creative time overall.

While clearing out boxes of random stuff, I came across my old art box. A few years back I was doing a lot of drawing. Some of those pieces are still on the walls, quietly existing in the background. Going back through my sketch pads reminded me how much I enjoyed that time — sitting down, getting lost in the process, and creating without overthinking it.

Somewhere along the way, my devotion to photography pushed that part of my creativity aside. Photography became the main focus, and drawing slowly faded into the background.

So now I find myself asking a question: do I try to find a better balance? Do I knock back some of my photography to bring art back into the mix?

The problem is that if anything takes a hit, it would be my film photography. It takes the most time, requires the most effort, and yet it’s also the part I enjoy the most. That slow, hands-on process is exactly what draws me to it.

So… decisions, decisions.

For now, I don’t have an answer. Maybe balance is the answer, or maybe it’s about allowing different creative phrases to come and go naturally.

Anyway, here are a few of my drawings — all done with POSCA pens.

Thanks for looking.
