Saying Goodbye to Ondu: A Legacy in Pinhole Photography

For over a decade, Ondu has been a cornerstone in the world of pinhole photography, crafting beautifully designed wooden cameras that have captured the imaginations of photographers worldwide. However, earlier this week, they announced that they would be ceasing manufacturing, marking the end of an era for the brand and its dedicated community.

In an email to their customers, Ondu shared their decision, hinting at the possibility of small-batch production in the future but confirming that large-scale manufacturing will no longer continue. While this news is sad, it’s a choice I completely understand. Creativity flourishes with change, and after 11 years of crafting some of the finest pinhole cameras on the market, it’s only natural that Elvis and his team feel the need to explore new horizons.

A Journey of Craftsmanship and Passion

I still remember Ondu’s first Kickstarter campaign, where they introduced the Mk1 Ondu pinhole camera. From the very start, their cameras stood out—not just for their functionality but for their artistry. Built with precision, care, and a true passion for analog photography, Ondu cameras became some of the most visually stunning and well-crafted pinhole cameras available.

Their dedication to quality and design was evident in every model they released. Each camera was a testament to their belief in slow, intentional photography—something that resonated deeply with those who cherish the art of film photography.

Ondu’s Lasting Legacy

Even though we are saying goodbye to Ondu as a manufacturer, their impact will remain. Their cameras are built to last a lifetime, and I have no doubt they will continue to be used and cherished for generations to come. More importantly, Ondu has introduced so many people to the world of pinhole photography, helping them rediscover the magic of capturing light in its purest form.

The legacy they leave behind is more than just cameras—it’s the inspiration they’ve sparked within the community. Through their work, countless photographers have embraced a slower, more thoughtful approach to image-making, one that prioritizes craftsmanship and creativity over instant gratification.

A Heartfelt Thank You

To Elvis and the entire Ondu team—thank you. Thank you for your passion, your craftsmanship, and your dedication to keeping pinhole photography alive in a digital world. Your cameras have not only provided a tool for creative expression but have also fostered a global community of like-minded photographers.

While this chapter may be closing, I have no doubt that your journey is far from over. Wherever your creative path takes you next, know that the pinhole community and most of the film photography will be watching with excitement and support.

From myself and from pinhole photographers around the world—thank you for everything. We look forward to seeing where your journey leads next.

I have owned an Ondu since around May 2016—the Mk2 multiformat—and later added the 4x5 Rise, which has become one of my favorite large format pinhole cameras. These two cameras have accompanied me on many trips and will continue to do so for many more.

Here are just a few of my favorite Ondu pinhole photos.
